The Magpies and Saints face competition from Moore’s former club Leicester City, as well as the likes of West Ham, Wolves and Crystal Palace, for the centre-back. They are all reportedly keeping tabs on the 27-year-old ahead of a potential January move, per TEAMtalk.
Magpies could add one of Championship’s best performers
Moore has been a standout performer for Reading so far this season, with the Royals having started the campaign in excellent form under new manager Veljko Paunović. The 27-year-old has so averaged 4.3 clearances and 1.1 interceptions per game, which has helped the Royals record six clean sheets already this term (Sofascore).
The defender has been identified as one of the best players in the English second tier and it is thought that Leicester are considering an approach to bring back the 27-year-old. However, Moore chose to leave the club after he narrowly missed out on a Premier League winner’s medal in 2015/16. That came after not playing enough minutes to qualify for such an accolade, per The Athletic.
Reading have been hoping to secure the in-demand defender on a new deal, but they are facing the prospect of losing him amid a host of interested Premier League clubs. Newcastle and Southampton are both in the running and could make a bid for the defender in January, per TEAMtalk.
Newcastle and Southampton would both benefit from Moore’s qualities
Newcastle have been beset by injuries to the likes of Paul Dummett and Jamal Lascelles so far this season, which suggests Steve Bruce’s side could do with adding another quality defensive option. Moore has been singled out on numerous occasions by various Reading managers over the last years – Paul Clement even labelled him a “standout” player in the Championship.
Meanwhile, Southampton have had to wait for £10.9m summer signing Mohammed Salisu to make an impact as he has been plagued by injury. The Saints have seen their other centre-backs deliver inconsistent performances over the last year (the 0-9 shellacking by Leicester was 12 months ago today), so a player with Moore’s consistency and quality could be a coup for them if they could beat the likes of Newcastle to his signature.
