Pete Graves has revealed some shocking Newcastle United transfer news involving Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: Deal alive?

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein claimed earlier this week that a move for Lingard to St James' Park was on the verge of collapse, with Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United also seeing approaches turned down.

However, 90min journalist Graeme Bailey appeared to give some hope to the Toon Army, claiming that the deal is not completely dead.

With just a few days of the January transfer window remaining, a lot of twists and turns can still happen, so Lingard moving to the northeast is not a prospect which should be completely ruled out just yet.

The Latest: How much?!

As per Sky Sports journalist Graves, the full package in the potential deal for Lingard to switch to Newcastle could work out at nearly £1m a game, if Manchester United get their way.

While a fee has not been agreed between the two clubs yet, Graves has not ruled out the transfer, although he claimed that it looks unlikely at this stage, saying:

"Lingard wanted to sign (#nufc) and felt he had blessing from Rangnick.

"Clubs couldn't agree fee (one source told me full package could work out "nearly a million pounds a game").

"Remains to be seen if they're able to resurrect, but doesn't look likely."

The Verdict: Get it done

While signing Lingard on loan looks to be expensive for the Magpies, they need to weigh up how much they would spend on him now compared to how much money they could lose at the end of the season by being relegated from the Premier League.

Quite simply, the 29-year-old could make the difference for them to stay up, given his past heroics and the fact that he knows the top flight well.

Described as 'sensational' while on loan at West Ham last season by Arsenal and Premier League legend Nigel Winterburn, his nine goals and five assists there showed that he can be deadly in front of goal, and that is exactly the extra quality that Eddie Howe's team will need to give them the best fighting chance of retaining their top-flight status.
