‘No good can come from this’ – Southampton fans react to potential takeover announcement

The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are still reeling after a historic night in the EFL Cup last night…

Whilst Liverpool were the favourites for the tie in the Tavern, the Saints came out on top with a goal from Shane Long sealing the result for Claude Puel’s side – with a date at Wembley now awaiting the Southampton faithful.

After such an exciting night, many wanted to spend today recovering – but it would appear as though the buzz around Southampton has some way to go yet – especially with this latest announcement.

In a statement from Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr, posted on the official Southampton website, it has been revealed that Chinese investment is potentially on the horizon for the South Coast-based side.

Described as a ‘partnership’, Liebherr has revealed that the deal could help Southampton to continue to grow – and whilst it still needs to get passed through Premier League law – it would appear as though the Southampton owner wants the deal to go ahead.

The news has generated quite a mixed response from the punters in the Transfer Tavern, with many Southampton fans questioning the motives behind the deal. Unsurprisingly, it is a very similar tale on Twitter…

A very mixed bag of responses here from the Southampton fans on Twitter.

The general consensus seems to be that the partnership could be a good one, but only if matters of the club are put first. However, with Chinese football quickly rising in significance, many fans are – understandably – concerned about what the partnership could mean for Southampton Football Club.

Southampton fans – what do you think? Is this bad or good?
