What a start to the season it has been for the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern…

For all of the build up to the Premier League season, Man Utd have taken the season by storm – with an opening day demolition of West Ham a particular highlight.

With Romelu Lukaku firing, Paul Pogba impressing and Phil Jones delighting at the back, things are looking very good for the Red Devils.

Their fine start to the season has left some fans dreaming of a Premier League title challenge, with Jose Mourinho’s side looking deadly at present.

Their performances certainly hint at a very successful season, but our landlord isn’t so sure that a Premier League title is forthcoming. Rather, he thinks that they might be a little short this season, and he’s got a few reasons why.

 Lack Of Experience

For all of the quality within the Man Utd first team, they do lack Premier League experience at the highest level.

In fact, with Wayne Rooney out of the door, there are only a few stragglers leftover from Sir Alex Ferguson’s glory days – and that’s a problem.

There is a lack of leadership and a lack of proven quality in the Man Utd dressing room, and that certainly counts for something. Personnel wise, they have one of Europe’s best squads – but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

 Defensive Issues

Offensively, Man Utd are one of the best sides in Europe. With the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and now Zlatan Ibrahimovic to call upon – Mourinho has so many options.

However, at the back, he has a bit more of a problem.

He’s currently without a genuine recognised left-back, given that Luke Shaw is out injured and Daley Blind isn’t particularly comfortable there, whilst having to rely upon Antonio Valencia on the right is also far from ideal.

Centrally, Victor Lindelof has looked shaky – and the inconsistency of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling has been made evidently clear.

Their backline is decent, but it’s not close to some of their rivals – and that could cost them as the season goes on.
