Sunderland are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League and their fans here in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly worried relegation could well be on the cards!
As of writing, Moyes’ men sit rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and with a tough, busy run of games during the Christmas period, the need to pick up points continues to grow.
There are other teams struggling around them but if the Black Cats are to have any chance of surviving, they need to get some results sooner rather than later.
And having spoken to our Sunderland-obsessed landlord about the good, bad and the ugly at the Stadium of Light, he’s gladly given us some help choosing a couple of players who should be coming in and leaving the club this January.
It’s going to be a massive part of the season for Moyes, who has to get his business right if the team are to survive.
So with that in mind, here’s one player who should come in and one player that should leave Sunderland this January if they are to survive this campaign…
Out: Wahbi Khazri
He’s been a decent signing for Sunderland for a couple of seasons now but this campaign, Tunisian international Wahbi Khazri has been seriously ineffective.
He’s played ten times and has failed to score this season and for a team that need goals, he just doesn’t seem to be the answer right now.
There’s plenty of endeavour and running whenever he enters the pitch but when it comes to out-and-out goalscoring, he doesn’t appear to be good enough right now.
In: Nathanial Chalobah
Nathanial Chalobah is edging closer and closer to the Chelsea first-team and whilst he’s made plenty of appearances on the bench this season, he’s still not quite a regular starter.
With Kante, Matic and Fabregas all on the books at Stamford Bridge, it still remains difficult for the 22-year-old to really break into Jose Mourinho’s senior Chelsea squad.
A loan move to Sunderland might be best for both parties. Chalobah has a distinct quality about him in the middle-of-the-park and another transfer to a side in the Premier League will really push his development yet again.
