Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season following the news that Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Kane have penned long-term deals with the club.
46-year-old Pochettino took over at the North London outfit back in 2014 after impressing in a short stint at Southampton, and he has since transformed Spurs into one of the best teams in the country with three successive top four finishes in the Premier League. And England captain Kane has become one of the best strikers in world football in the last few years in netting a remarkable 140 goals in 213 games for Tottenham, with his tally of 41 this time round his best in a single season.
As such, there are many excited and expectant Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, and they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by recent reports linking midfielder Victor Wanyama with a move away this summer, with Borussia Dortmund reportedly keen.
And with fellow midfielder Mousa Dembele seemingly on his way out of the club, Tottenham would be silly to sanction Wanyama’s departure as well, as there is little doubting that he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Ultimately, the Kenya international struggled with injury this season in accumulating just 18 Premier League appearances for Pochettino’s men, with the 26-year-old missing much of the first half of the campaign with a knee problem.
And while he didn’t immediately reclaim his place in the starting eleven, starts in their last three games of the campaign underline that the former Southampton star remains one of the most influential players in the Tottenham squad, and one they will certainly need next term if they are to challenge for major honours.
After all, the 26-year-old alongside Belgium international Dembele struck up a formidable partnership in helping Spurs finish second in the Premier League back in 2017, with the duo arguably only behind Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic in terms of the division’s best central midfield pairing.
And with Dembele likely on his way out of the club this summer, given he has just a year left on his contract and no extension has been agreed, Pochettino simply cannot lose two of his most important midfield players – doing so would leave an almighty hole which the current options of Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko simply aren’t able to fill.
So while Wanyama spent a decent chunk of this term out with injury, he remains an integral player in Pochettino’s squad, and one that Spurs simply must retain this summer amid interest from Borussia Dortmund – they’d be making a huge mistake if they let the £27 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) leave during the close season.
