Crystal Palace have made an approach to sign Jordon Ibe from Bournemouth this month.
That is according to Football Insider, who report that manager Roy Hodgson is eager to add to his attack before the transfer window closes. But is the 24-year-old really the player he should be looking at?
Hodgson’s desire to bolster his attacking options comes as no surprise. This season, Palace have scored just 19 goals in the Premier League, leaving them 19th in the table for goals for (via WhoScored).
But given Ibe’s track record in front of goal, he does not look like the man to help them in that department. He managed just one Premier League goal in 19 appearances last term and two in 32 the campaign prior.
With Hodgson clearly needing to add more goals to his attack, that does not make for good reading.
When it comes to dribbling, Ibe’s numbers look much better, with the English winger averaging a respectable 1.4 dribbles per Premier League game last season. However, that falls short of Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and Jordan Ayew’s averages this campaign (5.1, 1.8 and 1.7).
When you consider all of that, Ibe is unlikely to bring goals to this Palace side and would not be an upgrade on any of the club’s most prolific dribblers.
Other than perhaps the need for an extra body in attack, it is hard to see what this addition would bring to the squad in the grand scheme of things.
Should Crystal Palace try to sign Ollie Watkins in the summer?
