Southampton take on Chelsea later today in the Premier League at St. Mary’s in what will almost certainly be a difficult match for the Saints.
Under Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea have made a fine start to the season, playing an attacking brand of football while lining up in a 4-3-3.
The Italian has rejuvenated the Blues following an extremely lacklustre campaign last term, but his decision to ditch the 3-4-3 formation that was regularly used by former manager Antonio Conte has seen Gary Cahill lose his spot in the side.
As a result, the central defender has admitted he could leave Chelsea in January with the Daily Mirror reporting that Southampton are one club currently monitoring his situation at Stamford Bridge.
At the back, from winning positions in particular, Southampton look defensively vulnerable, and £13.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Cahill is the sort of player — with all his experience and defensive quality — who could help the team out in that area.
Take a look at what Saints supporters are saying on Cahill here…

Would be a huge signing, but doubt it will happen.

As much as I would love it to happen it won't. There is no way we can afford his wages. The costly mistakes in the transfer market is now taking it's toll.

He’d sort the crap out at the back!

I’d take Cahill in January…..May not be the “Southampton Way” but that’s long gone….we need experience at the heart of the defence and he could provide that. #saintsfc
