According to The Daily Star, Tottenham are eyeing up the signing of Bournemouth and Netherlands defender Nathan Aké.
This would be a fantastic signing for Spurs, however, they face stiff competition from Man United for the former Chelsea man’s signature.
Signing the Dutchman would be a necessity if The Lilywhites were to lose Toby Alderweireld in the summer, or even January. The Belgian’s future is still very nebulous in north London, and fans are on edge regarding his future. His departure is still very much a possibility, so Spurs should be prepared.
However, even if the club kept hold of Alderweireld, it may still be wise to sign Aké. The Tottenham defender turns 30 this season, while his partner Jan Vertonghen turns 32. Although Mauricio Pochettino has Dávinson Sánchez to turn to, and perhaps Juan Foyth, he will want more options for Spurs in future years.
At only 23, Aké has the potential of becoming a mainstay in the Tottenham defence for many years to come. It is also a huge bonus that he is already an established defender in the Premier League, meaning he would be an instant success.
Tottenham now see themselves as a force that want to compete on all fronts, and therefore will need a squad that can compete. Already this season The Lilywhites have been left exposed after a number of injuries, on top of the fact that they did not buy anyone over the summer.
Aké would be a way of remedying the summer’s mistakes, and Tottenham should do everything they can to beat their rivals to the deal, be it in January or next summer.
