Tottenham fans on Twitter aren’t against selling Alderweireld to Barcelona

Whilst a lot of Tottenham fans will be holding out on a contract extension for Toby Alderweireld, the realists who have been looking at the situation will be well aware that the chances of the 29-year-old renewing his deal are minimal. However, according to The Mirror, Barcelona are keen to sign the Belgian in January and it could a move that the fans wouldn’t mind seeing.

Alderweireld has been one of the key elements in making this Tottenham the side that they are. The Belgian was brought into the club by Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the 2015/16 season and it’s no coincidence that the club was heavily involved in two title races in two years after he signed. Now, though, the club needs to be ruthless and move on if he doesn’t want to stay and should take Barcelona’s money in January if there’s an offer.
Barcelona and Tottenham are two of those who are heavily interested in another centre-back, Ajax’s young Matthijs De Ligt. However, if Barcelona poach Alderweireld from Spurs then the Lilywhites will have a clearer run at the young Dutch defender. The situation has all the makings of Daniel Levy masterclass and if Tottenham can offload the ageing contract-reluctant Alderweireld to a non-Premier League club and then bring in De Ligt in the same window then the fans will surely be delighted.

Whilst the fans love Alderweireld, selling him to Barcelona could be a great move by the club if Levy plays his cards right.
