The mood at Tottenham Hotspur was characterised by optimism for a potential title challenge last week after they laid down a gauntlet to their title rivals with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford, but that feeling was temporarily crushed on Sunday afternoon as Watford ran out 2-1 winners at Vicarage Road.
Troy Deeney’s strike was ultimately enough to ensure the Hornets maintained their 100% start to the season at the expense of Tottenham’s own flawless opening, and the Spurs supporters were suffering something of a crisis of confidence in the aftermath of proceedings.
Watford’s start to the season suggested that Spurs would be in for a tough afternoon, but if Pochettino’s men genuinely want to challenge for the title this season then these are the kinds of challenges which they have to overcome.
Frustration was naturally rife amongst the supporters on Twitter whom were eager to criticise the overall team display and Pochettino’s perceived tactical failures, but they were particularly underwhelmed by the performance of Ben Davies – a player who is normally so consistent.
Indeed, the quality of Davies’ performances since the beginning of the 2017/18 season have kept Danny Rose out of the starting eleven for the most part, but it appears that a handful of fans are ready to see Rose restored as the club’s first-choice left-back.
The consensus on Twitter is that the Wales international (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt) is playing at a level below what’s required for a side with aspirations of mounting a title challenge.
Here’s what the Tottenham fans on Twitter have had to say about Davies’ performance against Watford…
Ben Davies will be lucky to survive half-time. Tottenham have been lukewarm in general, but this has been his worst performance in seasons.

Been very sub-par this game, at the peak of his game he looks okay, we need the next level, I hear we have this Danny Rose fella who looks good

Ben Davies no where near good enough

Ben Davies out

Said it before and I'll say it again. Ben Davies is NOT good enough to start. He is a mid table team LB at best. Not Tottenham

Left back is 100% Spurs' weakest position. Ben Davies is very average and no one can find the old Danny Rose.

We really need to upgrade on ben Davies
