Many Tottenham Hotspur supporters believe that Erik Lamela could be the answer to their problems in the striking department.
The Argentine has recently returned to the team after missing nine Premier League matches with a hamstring injury (Transfermarkt) and has gradually been building up his fitness over the last couple of months.
However, with Spurs currently desperately struggling for strikers following injuries to both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, it seems that some of their fans think that the ex-Roma man could fill the void left by the duo. Lamela was brought on for the last 27 minutes of their most recent game against Chelsea by Jose Mourinho and he did have a positive impact, making a clever run behind the Blues defence before forcing an own goal from Antonio Rudiger (BT Sport).
That has led to a suggestion from @coys100 on Twitter that the 27-year-old could fill in at centre-forward, insisting that he could play a similar role to that of Roberto Firmino at Liverpool.
Could Erik Lamela play through the middle?
Plenty of Spurs fans agreed with this, admitting that they believe Lamela could be effective as a false nine. Here is what some had to say…
I’ve always said this. He’d be perfect in a false 9, similar to even free had a good start last season before getting injured

Would like to try it and see but he never seems to use his right foot, that game against Middlesbrough really showed how one footed he is

Yep!!! With current scenario thats the role i would have him in. At least then the ball will stick more when spurs go forward.

Whenever he’s ready to play 90, it seems obvious.

I just watched the second half back and Lamela ran the channels and opened the game up for Dele and Lucas. 🧐Surly it’s a false 9 with Bergwijn. Lamela. Lucas 🤷🏻♂️

The man talks sense!
People think Dele is the answer but he isn’t, he needs to have a free role in order to be at his best.
Lamela can play a disciplined role and would happily drop in and do some of the dirty work if need be.

I like that it could work

I think he could do really well in this role is just if he can stay fit or not

I like this. Great shout.
