Profit Players: Glenn Murray

Murray

A very successful striker in the Championship and League One, Glenn Murray was unable to replicate the sort of proficiency he showed in those divisions in the Premier League with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

Considering that, it was a gamble for Chris Hughton to rely on the Englishman heading into English football’s top flight as a newly-promoted side.

Yet it was one the Brighton boss still took and one that paid off tremendously well in the end to say the least.

Bought permanently for £3.15m (Transfermarkt) back in January 2017 after initially arriving at the Amex on loan from Bournemouth, Murray went on to have a successful 2017/18 Premier League campaign as he helped fire Brighton to safety.

That term, the 35-year-old scored 11 goals while this time round, he has already surpassed that tally with eight games still left to play.

It is not just his goalscoring exploits that have been impressive, though, with Murray’s all-round game having been efficient since rejoining the Seagulls.

With his back towards goal, the former Bournemouth man holds the ball up so well before bringing in another team-mate into play.

As well as that, for a centre-forward who is 35 years of age, Murray is not static and is willing to get running when necessary.

It remains to be seen how long Murray can keep all of the above going, especially in a division as physically demanding as the Premier League.

But at just £3m, regardless of what happens from this point on, Murray has been an absolute steal for Brighton.
