Pundit: This Chelsea player was ‘vital’ in the win vs Leiecster City over the weekend

For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, there is nobody better than Thibaut Courtois…

The Belgian has taken over seamlessly from Petr Cech in recent years, and with the Blues having a solidified defence under Antonio Conte, his game has really gone on to another level.

He proved that once again over the weekend against Leicester City, putting in a fantastic performance against Leicester City. His performance was so good that it warranted inclusion in BBC Pundit Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week, with Crooks waxing lyrical about the Belgian.

Crooks said: “He foiled the counter-attack led by Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez in the first half at the King Power Stadium, producing a quite brilliant save at a crucial time in the match. It gave Chelsea time to regroup, continue with their strategy, and pose their own threat”.

He added: “Courtois kept his nerve and went on to play a vital role in Chelsea getting maximum points”.

Goalkeepers are an often underappreciated member of the first team, and that is certainly true at Chelsea. The fact that the Blues are blessed with so many great defenders often leaves Courtois with little to do, but it’s the individual saves – like that at the weekend – that make the real difference.

Courtois is a top shot-stopper, and Chelsea are lucky to have him.

Landlord’s Verdict

Goalkeepers are rarely mentioned unless they make a mistake, and so it’s nice that Courtois is receiving some praise for what was a very good performance.

Indeed, he has been in fine form all season long, and that’s a run that stretches right back through to his first game in a Chelsea shirt.

What a player he is.
