The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the rest of the season, especially after what their side achieved last term…
Despite not being favourites for the title, the Blues stormed to the Premier League title last season with a flurry of excellent performances.
In truth, they really deserved the win, with every single player performing fantastically all season long. One player, though, that didn’t earn as much credit as his team mates was Nemanja Matic.
Indeed, his performances were so overlooked by fans and management alike that he was eventually sold to Man Utd over the summer.
This is a move that former Chelsea player Ray Wilkins has since slammed, and discussing Matic with Sky Sports, the pundit isn’t very happy at all.
Wilkins said: “You’ve got a guy here who was so paramount to Chelsea…all of a sudden you’ve sold him to one of or the biggest rival we have”.
He added: “I just could not see why we would let Nemanja go there. He’s been outstanding for us and you’ve seen in the short period that he’s been there, how he’s allowed [Paul] Pogba to basically go and do what he wants. I just couldn’t see that piece of business, at all”.
Matic was a key part of Chelsea’s first team during his time in London, not least last season. Though not as spectacular as Costa or Hazard, Matic remained consistent and even added an additional string to his bow last season in the form of an attacking threat.
Wilkins is clearly upset that his quality wasn’t recognised, though financially a move did probably make sense for the Blues.
Landlord’s Verdict
Chelsea did well to replace Matic with Bakayoko over the summer, but that doesn’t take away from what a poor piece of business this was.
Man Utd are looking incredible this season, and Matic has really provided the balance that they needed in midfield. Chelsea, meanwhile, could have really done with a bit more depth.
