Craig Mackail-Smith may have just got Peterborough promoted back into the Championship but it looks as though he will be playing Premier League football next season. BBC Sports reports suggest that Peterborough have accepted an offer from a top division club, believed to be Wigan Athletic.
The Latics are not his only admirers however, with reports linking him with a move to Everton and newly-promoted Queens Park Rangers. Mackail-Smith has made his desire to move on obvious earlier in the season after interest from Norwich City who are also still believed to be considering making a bid for the player. The 35 Goal scoring machine received a first call-up to the Scotland squad and after making the jump to International level, he has now set his sights on the Premier League.
“I want to play at the highest level I can attain and I want to play in the Premier League,” he told BBC Sport.
“I’d love to have the chance to sit down and see which club has the best philosophy and ability to nurture me.”
The Posh striker would do well in the Wigan set up as Roberto Martinez promotes a style of football that enhances the ability of all who play under him. It is unlikely that Everton would lodge a bid for another inexperienced striker at the highest level after picking up Jermaine Beckford last summer. The Latics may be favourites to acquire the striker’s services but it wouldn’t be a surprise if a bidding war sparked up this summer.
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony told BBC Sport: “At the moment there is anywhere between eight and 11 clubs involved.
“We’ve got two concrete offers and when you get into an auction you always try and push those offers up.”
With such a rife amount of interest it could just go down to the highest bidder at the end of the day instead of ‘which club has the best philosophy’. Obviously, it isn’t going to end up with £10Million offers flying around but QPR look best suited to offering the best financial package.
Odds are that whoever out of these supposed 11 clubs offers just over £4Million could soon have a prolific striker on their books.
