Former West Ham United wonderkid Reece Oxford could be set for a loan move to the fourth tier of German football, that is according to Kicker.
The 21-year-old came through the Hammers youth ranks and famously made his debut when he was just 16 in a Premier League game against Arsenal, helping his team to a 2-0 win by having a great game in which he kept Mesut Ozil quiet (Independent). However, he never quite managed to hit the heights at West Ham and spent time on loan at Reading and Borussia Monchengladbach before eventually signing for Augsburg in 2019.
Things haven’t really worked out for him there though, he has managed to make just eight appearances in the Bundesliga this term and only two of those were starts (Transfermarkt). As a result, it is now reported that Augsburg are looking to loan him out to the Regional League which is level four of the football pyramid in Germany.
It is some fall from grace for a player who was at one time linked with a move to Manchester United (Manchester Evening News).
Plenty of West Ham fans have been reacting on Twitter to reports suggesting Oxford is set to drop down a few levels for game time, with one suggesting that he is on a similar path to Ravel Morrison who was also highly rated as a youngster but never really lived up to expectations.
Here is what some had to say…
