Tottenham Hotspur are keen to bring in a number of additions this summer to help strengthen their side, yet fans in the Transfer Tavern may start to become concerned with how much they are going to need to spend to make it happen.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to add pace to his attack, as well as bolster his defence options this season, as he looks for his side to be competitive across all the competitions that his team are involved in.
Spurs, who are set to return to White Hart Lane for the campaign, will know that it will cost them a pretty penny to bring some of their targets in – however, according to reports it could cost them a substantial amount to bring one teenage sensation to north London.
And that’s because The Sun are reporting that it could will take Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy to smash their transfer record to bring Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt to the Premier League, with the Netherlands international reportedly commanding a £48 million figure this summer amid heavy interest from the North London club.
As such, it very much remains to be seen whether Levy is indeed willing to pay that much for the 18-year-old sensation.
Landlord’s Verdict: The 18-year-old has certainly impressed a number of European clubs with the early stages of his career and Spurs are keen to make them his, should they lose Toby Alderweireld this summer.
However, spending almost £50 million on a teenager could be considered too much of a risk, should a move fail to provide dividends and chairman Daniel Levy will likely be hugely concerned that it is too much of a large price to pay.
The locals in the Tavern will want to see De Ligt arrive at White Hart Lane and build a solid partnership with the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen, who have both joined Spurs from Ajax in the past, and will hope they can get a deal done.
