Ronaldo starts singing career

The Gob On Legs 13 October 2009, 15:45 3 minutes read

RonaldoCristianoI’ve had a traumatic weekend. With no Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal or Manchester United to fill the airwaves we’ve had to put up with International football and the X-Factor. These are uncomfortable bedfellows. The thought of international soccer stars singing in front of Simon Cowell, only to be ritually humiliated for the sake of entertainment fills me with dread. However even the prospect of Gary Neville popping into a fishnet basque to serenade us with his version of the Cher hit “Turn back Time” is a thousand times better than what I came across on You Tube this weekend;

Hateful isn’t it? No doubt United fans have missed Ronaldo’s beguiling soccer skills, but they have also been extremely fortunate. Can you imagine having to try and defend this? I mean his continual diving and winking was one thing, but this? This is cruelty unprecedented. United fans have learned once again that once you leave Old Trafford, it is all downhill. That’s not all that’s been learned on this weekend of internet international football either. This is what I discovered;

  • FIFA are not daft. With their 2010 showpiece even without the lucrative TV markets of say Russia or Germany, France, Portugal or Italy who could have been drawn to face each other in the play offs. FIFA decided that the draw would now be seeded. This is all to do with the notion of fairness and equality of course and not not merely a money making thing. Not did Michel Twatini being president of UEFA have anything to do with it either.
  • Rio Ferdinand is a muppet. Did anyone else want to see Ferdinand’s number held up when we had to sub on David James for the unfortunate Aaron Lennon? Apparently football experts are debating Rio’s England form at this very minute. Debate? There’s no debate! He’s a liability at the moment. He’s so bad even Argentina wouldn’t select him.
  • Argentina are laughably bad. Not even a rain lashed last minute winner against the mighty Peru is enough to paper over the cracks (Or should that be crack, eh Diego?). Under their legendary manager, they now face the prospect of missing out on the World Cup finals altogether if they lose in Uruguay and Ecuador manage to defeat Chile on Wednesday. Yes, I’ll be sobbing like a baby too if that happens. Fingers crossed!
  • Sir Alex Ferguson apologised! No really, he did! Well, he did say “I’m sorry if what I said caused any embarrassment, but you are still unfit and I am still 100% right.” That sounds like an apology to me! In the same vein as “I’m saying something in the hope I don’t get suspended by the FA, but as you know, I am always right so shut the feck up and don’t dare question me again…”

What did you learn this weekend? What did you think about Scotland’s trip to Japan with their B team? Italy for the World Cup? Will Portugal sneak in via the play offs now that Sepp has decided the toughest task they’ll face is a two legged game against the mighty Norway? Let us know below and join me next week, same time, same place when things get back to normal and I can slag off Ferdinand for his performances in a United shirt instead. Incidentally, the Ronaldo single will be in all crap record shops very shortly… “Amore Mio!”
