According to a recent report from The Sun, Scott McTominay could be set for a move away in the near future. The 21-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Manchester United having come up through the ranks at Old Trafford, but with just four league appearances so far this term, regular football could be something of a problem for the midfielder between now and the end of the season.
And reports suggest that manager Jose Mourinho is willing to sanction his loan departure come January, and one side that have been linked with McTominay in the past is Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, who should seek to add the Premier League sensation come the New Year in a bid to help their pursuit of an eighth successive Scottish Premiership title.
Ultimately, Rodgers’ side have made a somewhat underwhelming start to the 2018/19 season in winning just five of their opening eight league matches, sitting third in the division and already trailing leaders Hearts by three points.
And much of that can be pinned down to the lack of transfer business they conducted during the close season in adding just six new faces to the squad, three of which were on free transfers and a further two on temporary loan deals.
And that appears to have had an effect given Rodgers’ men have largely been lethargic and have struggled to score goals, although their 6-0 win over St Johnstone just prior to the international break could suggest that they are beginning to rediscover their best form.
Nonetheless, with Hearts and Hibernian starting well and Old Firm rivals Rangers building under Steven Gerrard, Rodgers will surely have to add to his squad come January to seriously help his team’s pursuit of eight in a row, and McTominay could be the ideal addition.
The 21-year-old has 29 senior appearances to his name for the Red Devils following his debut for the club back in May 2016, 23 appearances of which coming last season as Mourinho’s side finished second in the Premier League table.
And he has proven in those games that he has genuine ability in the midfield area and as such could be a huge asset to Rodgers’ Celtic, with the Bhoys boss himself possessing a proven record of giving players an opportunity to shine and develop in the first team.
And while captain Scott Brown is very difficult to dislodge in the middle of the Celtic midfield, at the age of 33 one wonders just how regularly he can feature in the second half of the season, and the same can probably be said of fellow midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu, who will turn 32 in January.
Thus, it does appear as though McTominay would get the opportunity of first team football at Celtic more regularly than he is currently getting at Old Trafford, while the chance to work for Rodgers, who has a proven track-record of improving youngsters, is likely to be of great interest.
And from Celtic’s point of view, they clearly need reinforcements in January to freshen things up ahead of a title push – thus, McTominay appears to be perfect addition.
