The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern want Rafael Benitez to be given a license to spend big this summer. The Magpies need to bring in a few more players in order to improve their fortunes next season, with a number of squad members simply not good enough to play every week.
One such example is Mikel Merino. The midfielder didn’t have the desired impact last season, and our resident Geordies are eager for him to be moved on this summer.
He’ll need to be replaced, though, and our landlord thinks that Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater, who is rated at £18 million by Transfer Markt, would be the perfect replacement.
Drinkwater hasn’t had the best spell at Stamford Bridge, but his talent is clear for all to see.
He was crucial during Leicester City’s run towards the Premier League title, forming a fantastic partnership with N’Golo Kante in the middle of the park for the Foxes.
Offering fantastic passing, running, tackling and general aggression, he was a real menace in the middle of the park – and that’s exactly what Newcastle have lacked over the last year or so.
Even at Chelsea, he’s looked more than comfortable alongside some of Europe’s best players, and it’s down to a lack of luck that he hasn’t gotten more minutes on the field. Thus, he may be eager to depart the club, and he’d certainly get what he craves at a club like Newcastle, and especially under a talented manager like Rafael Benitez.
This would be a shrewd signing, and a clear upgrade for the Magpies.
