Sheffield United have completed the signing of former Bury starlet Femi Seriki, as reported by All Nigeria Soccer.
The newly-promoted Premier League side have been able to take the young winger to Bramall Lane on a free transfer, after he was left unemployed following the Shakers expulsion from the Football League in August.
He will not join Chris Wilder and the first team just yet. Instead, he will be included as part of the Blades’ youth team in the Professional Development League 2, and work with manager Jack Lester.
Seriki, who plays predominantly as a right-winger, made a name for himself in the FA Youth Cup last season. He played an important role as Bury’s youngsters reached the quarter-final stage and even got on the scoresheet in their fifth-round victory against Preston North End.
Clearly, he was extremely highly rated at Gigg Lane. Despite still being a teenager he was included in the first-team squad on two occasions by Ryan Lowe last term against Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy and Port Vale in League Two. Indeed, despite the problems to have engulfed the club, it’s important to remember they were actually promoted last season, so earning a place in the squad was no mean feat.
The Blades have produced some outstanding young players in the past, bringing the likes of Phil Jagielka, Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire through their academy. Indeed, they also helped develop David Brooks after he was released by Manchester City as a youngster.
Seriki will hope that he can follow in those players footsteps by making a breakthrough at Sheffield United and going on to make a name for himself in English football.
