Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy looks like he could leave St. Mary’s this summer, with Aston Villa just one club said to be interested in the 29-year-old’s services.
According to Sky Sports, the Villans are keen on McCarthy having just signed his former team-mate Matt Targett in an £11m deal, though they could face competition from Liverpool.
As well as McCarthy, Fraser Forster could be on the move this transfer window, too, with Sky Sports also reporting that Southampton are willing to listen to offers for the England international after he dropped to third choice last season.
A St. Mary’s exit is probably what McCarthy needs right now as he searches for regular playing time next term.
The English goalkeeper lost his place in the Southampton starting XI to another English shot-stopper in Angus Gunn, and there have been no signs to suggest he can win it back.
He kept just one more clean sheet than his rival for the spot between the sticks (4-3) despite making 13 more appearances (25-12) while Ralph Hasenhuttl has also put his complete faith in Gunn.
“If he stays developing his game and if he stays working on his weaknesses, he has a big future as a goalkeeper,” the Southampton boss told the Premier League’s official club website (via Daily Echo) back in May.
Considering that, with Aston Villa seemingly in the market for a new goalkeeper having also been linked with a move for Stoke City’s Jack Butland, Villa Park could be the perfect destination for McCarthy if he is desperate for a more prominent role again.
