Southampton fans may not have been best pleased with what they witnessed from their team in Saturday evening’s game with West Ham United but many of them were left seething with Alex McCarthy after comments he made following the game were circulated on social media.

The Saints were undone by a Sebastian Haller goal in the first half which left them in the relegation zone and subsequently saw the Hammers pull four points clear of them (BBC).
McCarthy did his best to try and keep his team within a chance of getting a positive result from the game as he managed to produce three saves (as per WhoScored), however it was not enough as his team-mates could not do what was required of them at the other end.
Speaking after the game, the 30-year-old told the interviewer that perhaps ‘it wasn’t to be’ for them on this occasion; a thought that appears to have sent fans into a wild frenzy and leave many of the club’s faithful fuming with anger.
Some slammed McCarthy and stated that he was the problem, whilst others were furious with his explanation as to why they had performed to a sub-par level.
