Speaking to Southampton’s official website ahead of their EFL Cup clash against Sunderland tonight, Alex McCarthy has spoken of the “sky-high” confidence around the club at the moment, leaving their fans here in the Transfer Tavern in buoyant mood.
The Saints have turned their slow start under Claude Puel around this season with their 1-1 draw at Manchester City, the latest good showing from the team and the Saints’ number 2 ‘keeper, who is expected to deputise in goal tonight against the Black Cats, can sense a real buzz around the dressing room – McCarthy said: “We’ve had difficult games and we’ve got results from those games. Confidence in the dressing room is sky high at the moment and that’s why we want to do well in all competitions.”
The Saints stopper usually sees England number 2 Fraser Forster in front of him in the pecking order, but he does start EFL Cup games and kept a clean-sheet in the last round against Crystal Palace.
Should Saints win tonight they could face the likes of Arsenal or Liverpool who progressed last night but our resident Southampton fans aren’t scared: “We can beat anyone at the moment and I think we’ll only get better!” One Saints fan exclaimed by the bar.
