Former Southampton goalkeeper Peter Shilton has urged Fraser Forster to leave St. Mary’s this summer.
Forster, who is currently being linked (per Sky Sports) with a move away from the south coast, barely featured for the Saints last season, and Shilton believes his career is wasting away under Ralph Hasenhuttl.
“He was on the edge of the England squad,” Shilton told the Daily Echo when delving into Forster’s current predicament.
“If I was in his position, you aren’t going to take a massive pay cut, but you need to start looking to play at the top level again,” the England legend added.
It is hard not to agree with Shilton here. At 31, Forster really needs to be playing regularly again before he ends up wasting the rest of his peak years.
And at Southampton, it does not look like that is going to happen. After all, last season in the Premier League, he made just one appearance which came in a 3-0 defeat to West Ham.
Meanwhile, Alex McCarthy, who could also be on the move this summer, managed to make 25 appearances while Angus Gunn went on to feature on 12 occasions.
Based on that, it is clear that Forster is the third-choice goalkeeper at Southampton, which represents quite the downfall for the former Celtic man.
As Shilton pointed out, he was on the edge of the England squad, winning a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s 2014 World Cup squad while he also reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea (as per Evening Standard).
Indeed, it has been some drop-off, with Forster now surely needing a move away from Southampton if he is to get back to his best again.
