It’s easy to forget but when Mauricio Pochettino took over at Spurs the squad was poor, and our resident Tottenham fans here in the Transfer Tavern simply can’t believe the job he has done since.

Over his time at the club he has got rid of the over-paid deadwood and brought in young hungry players, who will fight for the shirt and listen to his every instruction.

He’s already seen the rewards for that work with their improved performances and almost got the ultimate prize last season when they came close to winning the title.

In the end, they fell short but they certainly look to have learned from the experience so far this season.

It’s testament to the Argentine’s squad management that they’ve been able to go again but it’s easy to forget there are some decent players out on loan from the club, waiting for their chance.

Our landlord has been keeping tabs on TWO in particular, though, and reckons Spurs fans should be excited about them…

Nabil Bentaleb

Bentaleb looked like he was going to be a mainstay in the Spurs side a few seasons ago but injuries have put paid to that and now he needs to re-establish himself.

It’ll be tough with Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama in his position but with a goal and two assists for Schalke so far this season in the Bundesliga, he’s having a right go at getting Pochettino’s attention.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel yet.

Nathan Oduwa

Oduwa is learning his trade at Peterborough United of League One and it could be the making of him.

He’s a pacy left-winger that can play on the right side too and likes to run at full-backs before delivering crosses.

That directness is the basis for all good wingers and a good spell at the Posh could lead him to figure in Poch’s plans.
