‘Sublime’, ‘Oh my word’ - Newcastle United fans react emotionally to club’s Twitter post

The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are feeling emotional on the 21st anniversary of ‘that’ Philippe Albert Chip in 1996.

On October 20th 1996, with Newcastle leading by 4 goals to nil and 3 points already emphatically secured against Manchester United, Phillipe Albert strode forward across the turf of St James’ Park to produce a moment of magic that lives long in the memory of Newcastle fans young and old.

The manner in which Albert so audaciously succeeding in looping the ball over Peter Schmeichel’s head from a staggering 25 yards is truly spectacular, and you would be hard-pressed to find a goal that remotely resembles the finish from the Belgian centre-back.

After being on the receiving end of a humbling 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United just two months earlier in the charity shield, Newcastle were out to prove a point. Albert’s stunning strike right at the death ensured that they went one better than United to claim sweet revenge in the most outrageous style.
