Surely 1 of these 4 defenders should join Southampton in January

Southampton are one of a handful of sides who have been in decent enough form in the Premier League this season and their fans here in the Transfer Tavern are pretty happy with that.

The Saints are well in the race for Europe in the Premier League table and, whilst the top four is out of the question this season, they could still finish with a Europa League place again – underlining the good job Claude Puel has done so far.

After talking to some of our Southampton-mad punters in the pub, it’s clear some of our regulars think the defensive back-line might be needing extra options to help bolster their European challenge.

There’s some real talent out there on the market right now and after some consideration, we’ve compiled a list of a handful of defenders we think would really bolster the Southampton back-line.

So with that in mind, we think 1 of these 4 defenders really should join the Saints this January…

Erik Sviatchenko

He’s the Danish international who has been on fire for Celtic this season and Erik Sviatchenko has showed few signs of his form slowing up as we head into 2017.

The former Midtjylland man only signed this summer but his strong performances have already earmarked him as a potential Premier League recruit and he’s a man Southampton should certainly have their eye on going forward.

At just 25-years-old, his peak is still to come too.

Kevin Wimmer

He’s a man that came into the Spurs first-team after the injury sustained by Toby Alderweireld but is now back on the fringes with the Belgian international back in the side.

The Austrian international has filled in commendably for Spurs but the pecking order at White Hart Lane is very clear indeed and if Wimmer really wants to kick-start his career in England, a move to Saints might not be such a bad shout in the slightest.

Mitchell Weiser

22-year-old Mitchell Weiser is one of a handful of emerging German talent to emerge from the Bundesliga in recent seasons but there is little doubt that Hertha Berlin man is one of the best.

His side are flying domestically and with him in at full-back, his team look extremely good indeed. He’d be hard to poach after some fantastic performances but for a future prospect, they don’t come much better in the slightest.

Djibril Sidibe

Highly rated left-sided defender Djibril Sidibe is currently at Monaco – who have impressed this season.

Naturally right-footed, the 24-year-old has been described as one of the best full-backs Ligue 1 has seen in years, with his heading, defending and attacking all really up-to-scratch.

He’d be an exciting addition to Southampton’s squad for sure and a man that would automatically compete for first-team action.
