The Toon Army were drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern last night after yet another humbling defeat in the Premier League.
Newcastle United have been fully dragged into a relegation battle in recent weeks after a dismal run of 8 games without a victory. The Newcastle supporters in the tavern were hoping their side’s positive opening to the season would set the tone for a steady mid-table finish this season, but their form of late suggests a relegation scrap could well be on the cards this season.
The Toffees arrived on Tyneside yesterday evening with plenty of confidence following the arrival of Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park, and they continued their good run of form under big Sam with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at St James’ Park.
Once again, Everton had Wayne Rooney to thank for their positive result, as he was the first to pounce on the loose ball after Karl Darlow had spilled a header from Aaron Lennon inside the six-yard box.
Darlow’s inability to keep hold of a relatively soft header from Lennon infuriated the Newcastle supporters.
The Geordies took to Twitter to unleash a tirade of criticism towards the man who has replaced Rob Elliot as their first-choice stopper in the last four matches.
However, it now appears that the supporters are keen for Benitez to dip deeper into his resources and lend 20-year-old Freddie Woodman an opportunity to impress in the first-team squad.
Woodman is yet to make his debut in the senior squad, but if the Newcastle supporters had any say in Benitez’s team-selection, then it wouldn’t be long before the World Cup winner got an opportunity to impress at the highest level.
Here’s what the Newcastle faithful had to say about Freddie Woodman on Twitter…
Karl Darlow is getting a lot of stick tonight, but it's worth remembering Rob Elliot is the worst Premier League number one of all time.
Hello, Freddie Woodman…

If you're Freddie Woodman you're wondering just how many more mistakes have to be made before he gets his chance #NUFC

Do us all a favour will ya and ask Rafa what Rob Elliot did wrong to be dropped for that? Freddie Woodman would do a better job. We could go down because of Darlow’s mistakes. Should have saved Mahrez’s shot and now tonight…nice one Karl

Don't think there could be a better time to give Freddie Woodman a go between the sticks. Under-20 WC winner and one of the highest rated prospects in the PL. Can't hurt to try.

How about giving Freddie Woodman a go ? Both keepers have been poor, Darlow costing us massively now #NUFC
