Swansea City man reveals what he wants to become at his club

Alfie Mawson has told Sky Sports that he wants to fill the gap left by Ashley Williams in the side, and our resident Swans fans here in the Transfer Tavern are desperately hoping he will.

The former Swans captain Williams left the club in the summer to move to Everton under Ronald Koeman, and the Welsh club have struggled in his absence with them 19th in the Premier League table.

Indeed, they’ve sacked Francesco Guidolin and appointed Bob Bradley this campaign as they look to get out of this rut, but Mawson thinks he can help replace a key figure on the pitch too.

He said: “I’d like to have the same impact he [Williams] had when he came in here. He was a League Two player, but he helped the club rocket up the leagues and played at the Euros in the summer. Not so much football-wise, but being a leader. That’s what some say is missing at this club because Ashley left a big hole in that respect.”

Mawson made his debut for the Swans at the weekend, a 0-0 draw with Watford and our resident Swans fans were impressed.

One Swansea fan by the jukebox here in the Transfer Taverm said: “He looks pretty solid to be honest. I know it’s only early days but he didn’t really put a foot wrong and he looks like he reads the game pretty well, long may it continue!”

Our landlord thinks that the ex-Barnsley man has a massive future in the game, and tips the centre-back to become a top player in the Premier League.
