It was strange for Man Utd to be in the Europa League last season, but it was through that competition that they earned a passage into Europe’s premier competition – the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils are famed for their multiple successes in the competition, and this year they are in a very good position to continue that trend.

Indeed, under Jose Mourinho, there is a very strong group of players that are destined to achieve success in some form or another. Fortunately for Mourinho, his squad is huge and full of depth, and so whilst the Champions League is an important competition, it could also represent a chance for some of his squad players to feature.

Tuesday evening’s opponent, FC Basel, are a side that Man Utd should comfortably beat, and so Mourinho would be wise to rest a few players and include a couple of rarely utilised players.

Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick has seen his game time reduce massively this season, and it’s easy to see why. The English veteran isn’t getting any younger, and the rise of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic was always going to make life tough.

However, he’s one of Man Utd’s very few experienced options, and that could be massive on the big stage.

His arrival in the team would allow Nemanja Matic to have a rest, and the 29-year-old certainly deserves that after a stellar start to the season.

Carrick won’t let Mourinho down.

Victor Lindelof

At the start of the season, Lindelof’s inclusion wouldn’t have been considered a surprise – but it certainly will be now.

The defender has struggled to adjust to life at Old Trafford, and he looks set to sit through a slow introduction to the first team at Man Utd.

Still, he’s an experienced defender despite his relative youth, and given that Basel shouldn’t pose much of a threat going forward, it might be the perfect time to give him a chance.

He was an expensive signing – he can’t sit on the bench for much longer.
