Tottenham have one of the best defences in the Premier League right now and our local Spurs punters are big fans.
In goal, they have Hugo Lloris. A modern type shot stopper that can play with his feet, is quick off his mark and can make great saves too leaving him fully deserving his world class tag.
In the full back roles you have Kyle Walker and Danny Rose. Two England internationals that have come on leaps and bounds in recent years and are now good going backwards as well as they are bombing on down the flanks.
Finally, you have the icing on the cake. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are two top drawer centre-halves that would challenge to get in many a side.
Their understanding is fantastic and it’s a huge reason as to why Spurs look so good as a unit right now.
It hasn’t always been so rosy at the back for Spurs though.
Our landlord certainly knows this and that’s why it’s time to remind everyone of what their backline used to consist of.
Here are THREE of the worst Spurs defenders in the last ten years…
Benoit Assou-Ekotto
The full-back had one of the best chants we’ve ever heard sang about him here in the Transfer Tavern.
To the PussycatDolls ‘Don’t Cha’ the local Spurs fans would sing ‘don’t you wish your left back was B-A-E’ but truth be known that was his only redeeming feature in an otherwise poor stint at Spurs.
And, for the record, we really don’t wish that, not on our worst enemies in fact.
Federico Fazio
The 29-year-old joined Spurs in 2014 from Sevilla, and was expected to come in and make the centre-back position his own.
Let’s just say that didn’t go to plan……
Fazio now finds himself out on loan at Serie A side Roma, and he isn’t expected to return to White Hart Lane anytime soon.
Gilberto
(Not the Arsenal one.) This Gilberto was nowhere near as pivotal to his side as his namesake over at the Gunners and didn’t last very long at all.
You really have to plumb the depths of the Spurs annals to even remember this chap did actually grace the pitch at White Hart Lane, but who knows where you’d have to look to find a reason why he did so.
