West Ham just did not have a good transfer window in the summer and they are suffering for that now this season.
Indeed, our resident Hammers fans here in the Transfer Tavern can’t believe the man who bought Dimitri Payet into the squad last season, Slaven Bilic, was also at the heart of some of the deals that have gone so badly wrong so far this year.
The Hammers missed out on key targets and have bought players that simply don’t seem good enough to play for the club.
Yes, they have had issues with injuries but the team has been botched together on many occasions and they haven’t really gelled as a side yet.
Things are steadying from earlier on this year but there’s a long way to go and January could be key for the club.
It’s time, then, to take a look at some of the most surprising valuations in the Hammers’ squad according to transfermarkt…
Simone Zaza – £12.5m
Zaza just has not been very good for the Hammers this season but he retains a pretty competitive valuation in this list.
The striker came with a fairly decent reputation from Juventus and the Italian national team but it simply hasn’t worked and he still hasn’t scored.
It makes you wonder, then, what would his value be if he had managed to hit the net this season.
Gokhan Tore – £11.9m
Another howler from Slaven Bilic.
Though it’s only early days many West Ham fans are considering Tore a write-off despite his decent valuation.
Like Zaza it hasn’t worked and you know you’re not a fan favourite when your injury is welcomed by the fan base.
He has a lot to do to turn things around at the club and prove that he is really worth the amount next to his name.
Ashley Fletcher – £850k
Here’s a man who, arguably, should be worth more in contrast to Simone Zaza and Gokhan Tore.
We’ve only seen glimpses of Fletcher but he looks like he could be a very good striker and that should make his value go up.
Young English players often have quite the price tag attached to them and whilst it’s refreshing to see this isn’t the case with Fletcher, he deserves a little more than that.
