The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t get their heads around their side’s recent poor run of form. The Lilywhites are now without a win in three Premier League games, with two defeats coming amidst that run. To make matters more confusing, they were able to comfortably push aside European giants Borussia Dortmund in the middle of all of that, making their poor domestic form particularly befuddling.
Clearly, something isn’t right at Wembley, and their defeat to Leicester City on Tuesday proved that. However, at least there was one major positive takeaway from the game – the return of Erik Lamela. The Argentine has been out all year long owing to a long-term injury problem, and he returned from that spell by assisting Harry Kane as he looked to force his team over the line last night.
That wasn’t quite possible, but his performance in the closing stages proved one thing to our landlord – he could be the man to help turn Tottenham’s recent poor run of form around.
Lamela’s energy upon returning to the field was something that Spurs have lacked all season long. Whilst the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are fantastic footballers, they typically excel when passing and moving the ball. Lamela, meanwhile, is more of an attacking midfielder in the traditional sense – he likes to run with the ball and go past players. He also has a great passing range in his locker, too, and these qualities excel when combined.
Furthermore, his return will also give Pochettino more options in general, reducing the load on the likes of Alli and Eriksen. Both players have had little time off this season, and allowing Lamela to come in will give them the rest that they need to return to their best.
All in all, Lamela is a top attacking midfielder, and on his day he is unplayable. If Pochettino can get the best out of him, he could be the difference as the Lilywhites look to traverse the choppy waters they are attempting to cross – agreed? Vote below and let us know!
