A monumental summer of spending at Manchester United saw the Red Devils splash the cash in an effort to return the club to the forefront of European football. 

While things haven’t been up to scratch on the pitch in recent seasons, the Red Devils undoubtedly remain one of the powerhouses in world football in every other sense.

Though it’s becoming increasingly hard to remember the good times actually on the field of play, Old Trafford has played host to some of the best players to have ever laced up a pair of boots.

..And some of the worst.

The last 10 years have been up and down for United, the biggest fluctuation of fortunes since Sir Alex Ferguson moved the club ahead of Liverpool.

Rather amazingly, despite all the titles, the club have had some truly dismal duds turning out for them over the past decade.

Here’s the rather gruelling (for United fans anyway) process of looking at them all.

Tomasz Kuszczak

Though the excellence of Edwin van der Sar largely made up for the awfulness of Kuszczack, the Polish international was clearly out of his depth in the Old Trafford goal.

Ritchie De Laet

Though Ritchie De Laet hit headlines last season by winning both the Premier League with Leicester AND promotion with Middlesborough, he was clearly not good enough for the Red Devils.

Phil Jones

Harsh perhaps, but Phil Jones seems crushed under the sort of praise heaped on him by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Marcos Rojo

Following some impressive performances at the 2014 World Cup, Marcos Rojo was largely hailed as Louis van Gaal’s big defensive signing.

It has not worked out.

Alexander Büttner

United pipped Southampton to the post in order to sign Dutch left-back Alexander Buttner, though it proved a bit of a blunder.

Nowhere near good enough to oust Patrice Evra in the left-back role, he was quickly shipped off to Russia.

Chris Eagles

Chris Eagles now plays for Accrington Stanley. With all due respect to Stanley, it’s indicative of just how much he failed to live up to the early hype at Old Trafford.

Anderson

What more can be said about Anderson? Immense potential, but had disciplinary issues, ones so severe they ruined his career.

Rodrigo Possebon

Hailed as one of the most promising midfield talents to emerge from United’s ranks, a series of poor performances saw him shipped off to the Brazilian second tier.

Gabriel Obertan

The fact United even received a fee for Gabriel Obertan is quite frankly incredible.

Signed in the same summer Cristiano Ronaldo was sold, the Frenchman couldn’t have been further from CR7.

Bebe

One of the biggest cult heroes in Premier League history, a man who is said to have played in the homeless World Cup was bought for mega bucks a few years ago.

In truth, such a tournament was probably his level.

Radamel Falcao

One of the most feared strikers in Europe on his day, Radamel Falcao was a shadow of his former self upon signing for United on loan.

So much so that Chelsea signed him.

Where he was even worse.
