The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are already beginning to look ahead to the January transfer window. With less than a month to go until the window opens once again, it will be interesting to see just who Spurs target as Mauricio Pochettino looks to improve his team.
In the past, the Lilywhites have shown a preference for signing younger players. Amongst the likes of Dele Alli and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, Mauricio Pochettino clearly values the ability to develop players in his own image, and that’s something that will likely continue through to January and beyond.
When you consider who he might sign, then, it’s worth looking at young players, and one man that our landlord thinks would be perfect is Luke Shaw, who is rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt. Shaw has, of course, had a tough spell at Man Utd, and Jose Mourinho may be ready to cash in on him after a poor few years, and Tottenham should look to pounce.
After all, Mauricio Pochettino is already well aware of the Englishman from their time together at Southampton. Shaw developed significantly under the Argentine under his managership, and that eventually played a role as he earned a big money move away. At 22-years-old, he’s at a prime age for Pochettino, too. He’s old enough to have a bit of experience and quality behind him, but he’s still developing as a player and can be moulded in the image of the Argentine.
Significantly, he’s also English. Not only will he add to Tottenham’s homegrown contingent, but Pochettino has had incredible success in building English talents in recent years, with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Winks improving under the manager.
He won’t be a cheap signing, and his lack of action in the last year or two will concern fans, but in terms of raw talent and potential, very few defenders outshine Shaw. With Danny Rose facing an uncertain future, Shaw could be the perfect replacement. They’re very similar players, and Shaw could be every bit as good as his English rival.
