The West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been begging their club’s board to open the chequebook and make a move for Portugal’s William Carvalho after the defensive midfielder made the move to cancel his contract with Sporting Lisbon. The 26-year-old is just one of a number of Sporting stars who have asked for their contracts to be terminated with the Lisbon club.
Conveniently for the Hammers, Carvalho has been on their list of targets for some time now. The combative midfield destroyer came through the club’s academy, reaching the first team in 2011, seven years ago. Since then he’s made a name for himself as one of the best defensive midfielder’s in the Portuguese league and has earned himself an impressive 43 caps at international level for Portugal.
Now though, after spending his entire career so far in his native Portugal, the midfielder will be leaving Sporting after the club has entered freefall with their results, fans and owner. After the side lost 2-0 away to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League the club’s owner launched a scathing attack on a number of players, leading to the majority of the squad striking. The players have since been attacked at training by a mob of masked fans and lost in the Portuguese Cup final with the off-field issues impacting on their football.

Rui Patricio, William Carvalho, Gelson Martins & Bas Dost have all terminated their contracts with Sporting Lisbon…I’m not the only one who’d take all 4 of these at West Ham, right? #COYI

Whilst Carvalho will be looked at by a number of club’s across Europe, West ham should be busting a gut to get the Portuguese international on board. At the age of just 26, he could dominate the club’s midfield for years to come and would be a nailed on starter at The London Stadium under Manuel Pellegrini.
