The January transfer window is often described as a desperate time for clubs. Whether you’re scrapping to save your lives at the foot of the table or in need of that last push to claim a European spot, signings midway through the season are always gambles.
Sometimes clubs get it spot on with their scouting and negotiating skills in the first month of the year, but more often than not January signings don’t have the impact that is required.
Without doubt, 2013 threw up some interesting signings especially on deadline day where the majority of Premier League clubs were active, whether it was incomings or outgoings. Clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur missed out on their main targets whereas across London, Harry Redknapp and QPR (you may hear more about them later) splashed the cash and brought in a number of new faces to the bottom of the league side.
Loan deals are becoming a regular theme of the January transfer window and are often brought about because a club is desperate to sign a player but don’t possess the funds necessary to secure him for an extended period. The lack of big name signings in the window was replaced with a number of pointless deals happening in and around the top flight and here are my top ten.
