Though tonight’s Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow is little more than a dead rubber, considering how the Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern view the Europa League, our north London locals are in hopeful spirits.
It’s a chance to end their Wembley hoodoo and continue the momentum picked up following their crushing of Swansea City in the league, though that’s not the only reason to smile.
According to the Daily Mail, Spurs are not at all worried about the future of key defender Toby Alderweireld.
Much has been made about the Belgian’s reported £25m release clause, though the club are thought to expect to agree fresh terms with the former Atletico Madrid man.
It’s believed that while that clause is in his deal, it can only be activated in 2019, and only if Spurs decide to take up their option of extending that agreement until 2020.
The 27-year-old is one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most important outfield players, forming perhaps the meanest defences in the league with compatriot Jan Vertonghen.
His absence thanks to a knee injury for much of the past month and a half or so was a notable one, so this is good news to those from Hotspur Way parked up at the bar.
He will reportedly expect a bumper pay rise up to around £70k per week as a result, with our resident Spurs fans calling for Daniel Levy to give the man what he wants.
