Tottenham continue to be the thorn in Everton’s side as news emerges

While Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern have been drowning their sorrows this week, Tottenham fans have been in great voice after an excellent few days for their club.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men finally ended their Wembley hoodoo on Wednesday night courtesy of an impressive 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, which added to their fine 3-0 success over Ronald Koeman’s Toffees over the weekend.

That defeat on Saturday has left several Evertonians standing at the bar frustrated given their side’s stuttering start to the campaign, and a recent report from Weser Kurier (via The Sun) is unlikely to improve their mood much either.

And that’s because Spurs are reportedly set to rival the Merseyside outfit in the race to land Werder Bremen midfielder Thomas Delaney, who only moved to the Bundesliga side back in January of this year.

The 26-year-old ended a long association with FC Copenhagen, for whom he played 245 games and helped to win four Danish Superliga titles, to make the move to Bremen earlier this year, and he certainly hit the ground running with four goals in 13 games for the club last term as they finished eighth in the Bundesliga.

And the Denmark international has made a solid start to this campaign as well with one goal in his opening four league matches, and his excellent form for the German side appears to have attracted the interest of Pochettino and Koeman, as well as Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

Delaney’s move to Bremen in January means any possible move away is more likely to come in the summer, but it remains to be seen which of the aforementioned Premier League sides are able to seize the initiative over the coming weeks and months.

Landlord’s verdict: Tottenham comfortably swept aside Everton 3-0 in the Premier League at the weekend to highlight the gulf in class still evident between the two sides, which is sure to give Toffees boss Ronald Koeman much to think about ahead of the January transfer window.

And it appears that he, and indeed Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino, are lining up a move for Werder Bremen’s Thomas Delaney, a 26-year-old Denmark international who has bagged five goals in just 17 appearances for the German club since moving there back in January.

Spurs’ presence in the Champions League, as well as the last few league title races, may be more of an incentive for Delaney, leaving Tottenham again as the thorn in Everton’s side following their drubbing of the Toffees at the weekend.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if either firm up their interest with a concrete move either in January or the summer.
