The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been discussing the future of Marcus Edwards in recent days along with the fans on Twitter who are ready to wave goodbye to the 19-year-old talent.
A recent report from The Guardian claimed that Tottenham’s ‘mini Messi’ is set to reluctantly leave the club this summer after failing to convince Pochettino that he is worthy of a chance in the first-team. The news has hardly been met with huge surprise by fans and pundits, as the promising talent was sent home early from his loan spell with Norwich City due to issues related to timekeeping and accepting authority.
In response to the story, one of our regular punters delved into Twitter and reported that the Tottenham fans believe his attitude problem should encourage the club to offload him this summer. There’s no doubt that Edwards has issues away from the field which are ultimately deterring his progress, but offloading him on a permanent basis would represent a huge mistake at this stage in his career.
What Edwards needs is a mentor to aid his development and help him to combat his issues away from the field, as the potential he has shown at youth level suggests he could blossom into a devastating attacking player in the Premier League. A loan deal for Edwards would be the most beneficial deal for Tottenham to pursue, but club and player must learn from the Norwich debacle and find a club which the young winger will be comfortable adapting to.
After spending his youth in London with the Tottenham academy, a transfer to a London-based Championship club such as QPR or Millwall could prove to be a fruitful arrangement, especially if he is given proper support and guidance along the way from personnel at Tottenham. There’s no doubt that Pochettino’ dubbing of Edwards as a mini Messi has been taken slightly out of context as the comparison related to his style of play rather than the extent of his potential.
The style in which Edwards dribbles with the ball glued to his left-foot is a skill which is difficult to teach and rare to find in young players, so Pochettino and the Spurs fans would be foolish to turn their backs on him this summer before the club have given him a second chance to impress on loan next season.
