As far as successful opening days go, yesterday’s event at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was right up there, however, there was one moment when the Lilywhites feared the worst. The club’s U18 side went in at half-time 2-0 up, yet when Southampton pulled one back there were real fears that it could all fall apart for the home side.

At the end of the day, to many fans, the result was unimportant yesterday. However, to get off to a losing start would have been catastophic for the Lilywhites and when the young travelling Saints side pulled one back, the word ‘Spursy’ came to mind as the home supporters prepared themselves for an embarrassing turnaround on what was meant to be their special day.
In the end, it never came to that as the U18 side, with Ryan Mason in the dugout, regained their two-goal lead shortly before the end of the game to give the club a famous and successful opening day win, even if it was just a test event in front of 30,000 fans, less than half of the full capacity. Next weekend’s legends game will be a bigger affair in front of an increased crowd of 45,000, yet there are still no guarantees for the Lilywhites, who will always fear Spursy moments.

The Lilywhites were far from happy when they shipped the first goal at the new ground and will be hopeful that when Palace come to town next Wednesday they can keep a clean sheet on the opening senior game.
