Darren Bent has criticised Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy for ‘opening a can of worms’ with regards to the club’s financial situation.
Levy was quoted saying the club could’ve easily spent more money in the summer transfer window.
He said: “We could easily have spent more money on players. Who knows if that would have brought us more success or not? The right approach is to build from the bottom up. There is no quick fix to becoming a much more significant global club.” (Source: The Evening Standard)
The former Spurs forward was less than complimentary of Levy following his comments about the club’s financial position, saying he’s piling the pressure on himself.
Bent said: “It’s a strange statement, he can say it now because the window’s shut. What he’s done now is open a can of worms because soon as January comes around, if Spurs aren’t in the mix, Pochettino will say: ‘If you’re saying we can spend more, sign this player, this player and this player.” (Source: Football Insider)
Bent is 100% right in his assessment of the situation following Levy’s comments. Spurs spent over £100m in the summer transfer window, without addressing key issues, including at centre-forward, for example (via Transfermarkt). Admitting the club could’ve spent more will only provide Mauricio Pochettino with the opportunity to ask for more players in January if the Lilywhites continue their current form.
Spurs have won just two of their six league games so far this season. The white half of north London have also lost the lead in three of their last four Premier League/Champions League games, showing considerable weakness in defence (via WhoScored).
It was a strange move by Levy to admit the club could’ve spent more money in the summer. The pressure has now been increased on him ten-fold ahead of what could be a busy winter transfer window for the club.
