The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned over the long term future of Toby Alderweireld at the club.
According to a report by The Mail, Spurs face a battle to keep Alderweireld after refusing to relax their strict wage structure to pay him more money.
Discussions over a new contract for Alderweireld have reportedly come to a standstill as the club and the player are not in agreement.
The 28-year-old is currently earning a wage of £50k per week at Tottenham but is looking for an increase in pay.
Alderweireld, however, wants to receive a pay packet in excess of £110k per week, which is more than the current wage ceiling that Spurs have at the club.
With just over eighteen months remaining on his current deal, this leaves Spurs in a precarious spot, especially if the former Atletico Madrid and Southampton defender decides that he wants to force a move away from the North London club.
If Spurs trigger his one year contract extension, they also reportedly leave themselves vulnerable to losing him for £25m as per a release clause in his contract.
Our landlord thinks that Tottenham need to change their wage structure if they are to keep their star players and push themselves up to the next level.
