Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was in the firing line of many fans after their 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday.
The north London outfit were not at the races on the day and Frank Lampard’s side were deserving winners, with Willian’s brace sealing the points for them.
The Brazilian had already put the Blues 1-0 up by the time Gazzaniga had a rush of blood to the head and gave away a penalty which led to their second goal.
Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso was chasing down the ball with the Argentine goalkeeper also running towards it. However while Alonso slowed up, Gazzaniga did not and completely missed the ball when trying to kick it clear, instead going straight into the Spaniard (Sky Sports).
He initially looked to have got away with it, but after consulting with VAR the referee ultimately gave the spot-kick which was converted by Willian.
The 27-year-old has started Spurs’ last 10 Premier League games due to an injury to regular number one Hugo Lloris (Transfermarkt), but mistakes such as this will not do his hopes of remaining between the sticks long-term any good.
Plenty of Tottenham fans slammed Gazzaniga on Twitter for his mistake, here is what some had to say…
Gazzaniga is worse than Gomes.

Anybody still pudding themselves into thinking that Gazzaniga is anything other than a back up? Dreadful keeper

Gazzaniga is a number 2 at best. Unless it’s shot straight at him he doesn’t save a thing. Positionally he’s poor & he can’t get down.

And people used to moan Lloris, jeez Gazzaniga is a calamity, his positioning is useless as well
