Tottenham Hotspur are close to signing Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, with the Portuguese set for a medical in London today (13th January 2020) according to O Jogo.
If a deal does go through then he would become Jose Mourinho’s first signing as Spurs manager and would bolster a squad which is currently hamstrung by injuries. Indeed midfielder Moussa Sissoko has recently been ruled out until at least April after having surgery on a knee problem (tottenhamhotspur.com) so Fernandes would fill the void left by the Frenchman.
It is believed that he will arrive in north London on an 18-month loan which runs until the summer of 2021, with the Daily Mail reporting that there will be an option for Spurs to buy him included in the deal.
Tottenham appear to have snatched the player from under the noses of local rivals West Ham United, with Sky Sports reporting last week that they were close to signing the 21-year-old. If nothing else, he will perhaps bring some versatility as despite only featuring 13 times for Benfica this season he has played in seven different positions (Transfermarkt).
