Tottenham Hotspur: Fans react to latest transfer news as Chris Smalling linked with move to club

Chris Smalling is in talks about a return to the Premier League and according to Corriere Dello Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing his signature.

The centre-back is currently out on loan at Roma from Manchester United and he has been impressive in Serie A so far. Indeed, on average he has won 3.9 aerial duels, made 4.3 clearances, 2.2 interceptions and 1.1 tackles per game, helping the Italian outfit to five clean sheets (SofaScore).

It is suggested that Roma would love to keep the 31-time England international beyond this season, but they will face competition from both Spurs and Everton in the summer.

According to the report, Jose Mourinho will be in the market for a new central defender ahead of the 2020/21 campaign with Jan Vertonghen’s contract set to expire (Transfermarkt).

He will, therefore, weigh up a move for Smalling, who he has managed before during his time in charge of the Red Devils. It is thought that Ed Woodward, United’s chief executive, will demand a fee of £16.5 million for the 30-year-old.
