Harry Kane will be “desperate” to leave Tottenham if manager Antonio Conte departs the club, according to former England international Danny Mills in an interview for Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Conte’s comments

Spurs have endured an up-and-down spell of late, with results coming from all ends of the spectrum.

In the Lilywhites’ last six games in the Premier League, Conte’s side lost four times and won twice, including a 2-0 home loss to Wolves and a 4-0 victory at Leeds, illustrating the wildly fluctuating nature of their recent performances.

After Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Burnley, the 52-year-old spoke to Sky Sports and claimed that the club will need to make an assessment over his future due to his team's decline in recent weeks.

The Latest: Mills’ verdict on Kane's future at Spurs

Following the disappointing defeat at Turf Moor, Danny Mills issued his verdict on Harry Kane’s situation at the north London club on Sunday.

Speaking with Football Insider, the ex-Man City defender said of the 28-year-old: “He did okay on Wednesday, but he wasn’t quite at the same level as against Man City.

“He didn’t look too much of a threat, and he wasn’t up against world-class defenders. The team needed to help him out and play a bit better as well, but even still – you expect a lot more from him.

“It’s going to come down to money with his future. But if Conte leaves, that’s it – he’ll be desperate to leave.

“He probably thought Conte was going to bring a massive improvement, but it hasn’t quite happened. The manager is starting to come out and say ‘I can’t do any more’.

“You just start to think – is it the manager that’s the problem? Or is it the players?”

The Verdict: Kane could leave Tottenham

As per reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham’s star striker and his manager have already formed a great relationship, with the England skipper hailing Conte as “one of the best managers in the world”.

Therefore, it would not seem unreasonable for the Italian's potential exit to be the nail in the coffin for Kane in N17, with the 28-year-old already pushing for a move out of Hotspur Way last summer, with Pep Guardiola keen on luring him to the Etihad Stadium.

As The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported, Tottenham will not initiate contract talks with the striker due to the contract saga which took place last year. Instead, they will wait for the player to make the first move, but this could be a risky approach if Kane has his mind set on leaving the club.
