Tottenham Hotspur: Tony Cascarino tips Spurs to lose Sergio Reguilon

In a recent article, Tony Cascarino tipped Tottenham Hotspur to lose Sergio Reguilon due to a buy-back clause in the left-back’s contract at Spurs.

In his piece for The Times (via Football.London), the former Aston Villa, Chelsea and Celtic striker claimed that he ‘cannot see why’ Real Madrid, who reportedly have a £41 million buy-back clause in Reguilon’s contract at Tottenham, would not choose to activate their option to buy the defender either this summer or next.

Can you name these 10 former Spurs stars? Let's get started! Who is this?

Cascarino goes on to state that this is because the £25.2 million-rated 24-year-old has proven that ‘he can play in a back four’ as well as impressing when ‘playing in a five’ and that the Spain international ‘has loads of energy’, ‘gets up and down the wing’ and is a ‘fine footballer and defender’.

Will Reguilon will go back to Madrid?

Since moving to Spurs from Madrid in what was a £27 million deal back in September, Reguilon has indeed impressed for Jose Mourinho’s side, as Cascarino states.

Shortly after his arrival in London, Football Insider reported that the Spurs manager had been blown away by the Spaniard’s ‘star quality’ and potential to become a ‘bona fide Premier League star’.

And, over his 13 Premier League appearances, the left-back is beginning to prove the 57-year-old right, providing three assists, as well as making an average of 1.4 tackles, one interception and 2.3 clearances per game, culminating in an average WhoScored match rating of 6.87 – ranking him as the club’s eighth-best performer in the top flight.

Recently, the defender’s performance against Fulham – a game in which he provided one assist and earned a very impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.89 – drew praise from Kevin Phillips, who, speaking to Football Insider, claimed that Reguilon is ‘turning into the player Jose Mourinho wants’ as well as stating that the 24-year-old was a ‘shining light for Spurs‘ in the fixture.

However, while it would appear to be true that Reguilon could begin talks with Madrid, should the La Liga side offer Tottenham £41 million for the defender, this does not necessarily mean he will leave north London, as the player remains free to turn down the advances of Los Blancos, should he so wish.
